What is the Material of Sleepout Fabric?Updated 2 months ago
At Sleepout, we’ve engineered our own proprietary synthetic fabric blend to ensure the highest standard of safety and performance in our blackout curtains. Although the label reads 100% polyester, our fabric is uniquely developed to meet certifications like GREENGUARD Gold, which ensures products are low in chemical emissions and safe for indoor environments.
Why Not Natural Fibers?
When we set out to create our fabric, it seemed counterintuitive to choose polyester, especially with growing concerns around microplastics and plastic pollution. However, producing a curtain made from "natural" fibers like cotton or linen that can meet strict non-toxicity standards is far more complex—and misleading.
Natural fibers typically require heavy processing, including:
Formaldehyde-based resins for wrinkle resistance and shape retention
Plastic-based coatings to stabilize the fibers
Foams and sterilization chemicals during finishing
As a result, products labeled 100% cotton often contain just as many synthetic additives as those made from synthetics—and many still fail to meet safety standards like GREENGUARD Gold due to the use of formaldehyde and other toxins.
A Safer, Smarter Alternative
By designing our own polyester-based weave, we can eliminate harmful treatments and chemical residues while delivering a durable, effective blackout fabric. It’s the only way we’ve found to meet both our high safety standards and our customers’ expectations for performance and peace of mind.
